This presentation will provide an overview of building commissioning with particular attention to how the commissioning process can support energy efficiency goals.  Participants will learn about the commissioning progress and various commissioning certifications.  We will discuss specific examples from real world projects and how building commissioning resulted in energy savings or identified and averted energy waste.
 

Speaker: Christopher Richard, PhD, PE, LEED AP, CEM, CxA


Dr. Richard combines both quantitative and qualitative analysis methods to address complex technical and operational issues in both the public and private sector. He is the president of Smart Building Systems, Inc. where he provides expert consulting to building owners, architects, engineers and facility managers on building automation and intelligent building systems.
 
As a former senior associate for global management consulting firm McKinsey & Company, he provided corporate executives with actionable plans to redesign business processes to maximize operational efficiency. As an engineering/technical consultant has worked with organizations like The Coca-Cola Company, DeKalb County Georgia and MARTA (Atlanta’s Transit Authority) to optimize their energy efficiency, reduce their carbon footprints, and optimize their fleet vehicle mix. Dr. Richard is a licensed professional engineer in thirteen states and has been a practicing engineer for more than 20 years. He is a recognized expert in in the areas of energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. Serving as an adjunct faculty member, he has taught both graduate and undergraduate engineering courses at such institutions as Stanford University, Georgia State University (formerly Georgia Perimeter College) and St. Leo University.
 
He holds both a Ph.D. and an M.S. degree in mechanical engineering from Stanford University where his research focused on smart product design, automation and robotics. A registered professional engineer in several states, he is also a LEED Accredited Professional (USGBC), a Certified Energy Manager (AEE) and a Certified Commissioning Authority (ACG).
